Chapter Twenty-Six

The bedroom door to her mother’s rooms opened and Katherine came to her feet, recognizing the young maid who dashed out. It was Daisy, a girl Kathy’s age, someone who she had spoken with often. Katherine stepped from the shadows and called out in a loud whisper. “Daisy!”

The poor girl started at the noise then ran to Kathy’s side. “You gave me a fright.”

“How is my mother? What is happening?”

“Oh, miss, I don’t know as I should tell you.”

“Please Daisy, please.” Tears flooded Kathy’s eyes.

“There, there, Lady Kathy, don’t take on so. Oh, it’s been real hard on her, real painful like. I don’t think I could ever have a babe after this. And how her ladyship tries not to cry out! Why she near bit clear through her lip with the last pain! And there’s blood down there, you know what I mean? She’s tearin’ up or something. I’m getting you upset; I’ll say no more.”

“No, please Daisy, I need to know. What does Dr. Anthony say?”

“Oh, Dr. Milagros is angry, at her and at everyone it seems. I never seen him like this – never. Not even when Master Andrew took those powders from his bag and gave them to the sick cat, may God rest his poor feline soul. Oh, I have to go – I’m supposed to see if Mr. and Mrs. D are here yet. Your mum’s been asking for Mrs. D.” With that Daisy ran to the door then she turned back once again. “I’m never gettin’ married. Never.”

More frightened than ever, Katherine sank slowly down onto the settee and covered her face with her hands, returning into the shadows to wait.
